Well, I found out why the Passat sounded like a lawn mower.... There's an exhaust leak where the downpipe meets the exhaust manifold, one of the visible studs is missing (the center one on the side facing the firewall).
Any advice on how to replace a broken stud on the exhaust manifold? Why did VW decide to use studs there? Does anyone know if the suspension on a A2 will bolt onto a B3 Passat?
