Insurance Coverage for your 16V? ([email protected])

I moved from MA to RI a few years ago, and swapped over my insurance then. If you think that insurance is high in MA, you should see RI. It's totally insane. Anyway- I always have kept collision on my cars (current car is a 92 GLI) since an accident that I had about 7 years ago. I had just bought a 87 GLI and had a lot of work done to it (over $2000). Got hit in a snowstorm and I didn't have collision insurance. Insurance company ruled it a "no fault" accident due to the storm, and neither insurance company would pay for my car (my insurance company paid for my medical bills, though). Car was totalled, guy had no money, so I couldn't even sue him. Lost the car, plus all of the money put into it. So now I always carry collision ($500 deductible), even though the book value of the car is probably only 3-4K. It's just for piece of mind, and I like the car.

I got rear ended at a stop sign last year by an uninsured, unlicensed, undocumented driver who had ben drinking cough syrup. He tried to bribe me, and then tried to fled the scene. The state police towed his car, fined him $75, and drove him home, which really seems absurd. My car had $1200 in damage to the rear end. If I didn't have collision, I would have been pretty much screwed. My insurance company took care of everything, and even waived the deductible since they got the name of the other driver from the state police. Without the insurance, I would have had a hard time paying for it- we just bought a house, and my reserves were a little low.
