Thanks for the help. That confirms what little I had remembered. 

My '85 Golf II was originally equipped with the 5sp ACH code transmission which 
had the smaller input shaft and the smaller 90mm output flanges. 
With the 16V motor, my intention is to utilize the later 100mm flanges and the 
larger input shaft. 
the reason I was inquiring of the MKIII 020 trannies is that someone had 
mentioned that it used a similar input shaft and that the clutch and flywheel 
would be the same for the 9A 16v and the 2.0 liter ABA motors of the MKIII. 
However, I liked the taller gearing of the MKIII cars which makes freeway 
driving a bit more relaxed.
