I've been considering swapping the stock 16v transmission for one from

and found one for $250 so I offered $150 via email and he said no way.
I called him up and asked if $200 would do it, and if so I'd get it
tonight... so that worked and now I have the transmission that should
be much better suited to the turbo'd engine. When I'm on the highway
it may be a little more pleasant too.

I have a complete transmission gasket and seal kit on the way so I'm
thinking of installing my limited slip. On the other hand I almost
don't even want to open up the transmission :) I am getting so lazy
when it comes to working on the car.

If I won't be able to get more than $200 for the 16v trans then it may
make sense to keep it for a spare. Other than a chipped reverse gear
it is perfect at 230k miles. What is a fair price to ask for it? Are
the closer ratio units in higher demand that the mk3 2.0l
transmissions?

From my experience, finding a MKIII 5sp transmission was more difficult to find than the older 16v transmission. I think the challenge stems from the fact that the automatic transmissions in MKIIIs were simply dreadful and most certainly guaranteed failure at some time. For awhile, no one could rebuild them so the only alternative was to convert the MKIII to manual.

I'd been watching Craigslist, eBay, local paper, and have visited several salvage yards in SOcal and one in NoCal. Typical of my experience was my most recent visit to a yard in Fremont CA where I found roughly 20 MKIIIs. Five were automatics, but the remaining fifteen were manuals. ONe of the 15 was a former automatic that had been converted to manual using a MKII transmission, there were two with broken reverse gears (Common on MKIIIs) and the remaining twelve had already extracted.

So I finally settled on rebuilding a 16V since they were easier for me to acquire. But getting a taller 5th is going to be a challenge because no one seems to perform the required machining on the taller gear to make them fit on the 16V drive shaft.

You are fortunate to have found a MKIII transmission. I've not been so lucky.
