Thanks for the idea of the ratchet strap.  I don't have a stress bar
but I have a 2x4 that can fit in the same position.

I don't think I've ever removed a transmission separate from the
engine in a vw.  Do the axles need to be removed from the hubs, or is
removal of the inner cv joint enough for clearance.  I'll have a look
through the manual as well.

What is a reasonable timeframe to remove/replace the trans?
