The downside to R134a is that it doesn't cool as well as R12. It's more about 
capacity than it is about having modern components though. To cool as well as 
an R12 system, an R134a system has to be larger although I don't remember how 
much larger. 

The difference won't be 70 degree air vs 30 degree air but the system won't 
make snowflakes either. In FL in August, it might be noticeable especially when 
sitting in traffic but at highway speeds, it should be fine.
