Les, If I recall correctly, you can remove the plastic trim from the inside of the hatch, which will allow you access to the lock mechanism. I think you need the star type Allen tool to work with the fasteners. I may be wrong here, since its been a while since I've messed with that portion of the car. And my car is still in Mexico, since I had to return to the US on such short notice. Maybe someday I'll win the lottery and be able to retrieve my beloved GTI. Sniff...
