mkgmap can cope with extended POIs as they are located at a separate block in
the RGN subfile.
Interestingly, such pois can have a type with max of  0x2FF1F  , with custom
pois at 0x011500+ so there is plenty of scope.

HOWEVER,your gps / mapseource might not be able to render them
