Hello,

>>Hehehehe!!! I assure you I have a much thicker skin than that Keith. I

encounter >>anything that will make me lose heart.

That's good to know ;)

Understandable, this e-gov thing is moving fast. Pity none of the
projects are Linux based. It looks like the government wants to join
the dark side that is Microsoft ;) Are people who actually choose a
Microsoft-based application in their right mind? I doubt it.

>>there is ONE project which is completely written in Java and is
database->>independent, so it can be switched over to a purely non-MS
platform in, >>say, 1 hour.

That's good to know. Maybe it's near impossible convincing the GOV to
use non-ms for now, but at least applications like this could be
switched over easily. On a (much) smaller scale that's what happened to
me too - my computer science lecturer wouldn't let me do a project for
Linux - but I did do it in Delphi, and Delphi progs can easily be
recompiled in Kylix.

>>Another thing that can be done to generate interest in Linux is to
work >>through the media, such as the computers supplements that come
with many >>newspapers

I think the newspaper idea is great. The Times have a technology
supplement every Tuesday called timesofmalta.com. It used to have
around 6 pages, but it now has two - 50% of which are adverts. Maybe
they could do a feature on Linux there. My Dad writes regularly in The
Times - I'll see whether it can be done.

About the committee, yeah, that's good too. The mailing list is great,
but I'm sure activities would not only boost Linux Users in Malta, but
encourage them to be more active. There are much more of them [Linux
Users] then I taught, I've been discovering them like wild weed in a
forest! A plan should be drawn up on what the committee would consist
of and what kind of activities it would organize. The activities would
be open to everyone - to make people more aware on Linux. I still get
the occasional, "What is Linux?"

Keith
