These are all valid points.
For me, the best thing about Linux is that it's not owned by anyone, =
unlike Windows. Noticed how students had to register to buy XP at that =
price? I wouldn't want a huge conglomorate like MS having all my =
personal details, probing my computer to make sure all my software is =
legal etc (let's face it, it's gonna happen).
MS is a company, and therefore profit is it's main goal, simple as that. =
And they'll stop at nothing to get the profit they (perhaps) deserve.=20
This is one of the main things in Linux's favour.

I think that the problem (?) is that:
a) Windows has become even more attractive to the general public, =
especially with the cheap give away prices to students. Basically Lm2.50 =
or so for XP makes it on par with Linux. Students will go on to become =
the developers, administrators, and most importantly - teachers - of the =
future.
b) No matter what is claimed, Linux does *not* offer the same =
functionality and user friendliness as Windows. Star Office is good, =
etc. but MS Office is undoubtedly better.
If you are the kind of person who uses Latex, etc. then Linux will =
seem attractive but if you are a beginner, Windows or Mac OS still seems =
a better choice.
c) There is a general lack of support for Linux in Malta. More ppl =
simply are more familiar with Windows or Mac OS. Even things like =
connecting your PC to ADSL or your digital camera using Linux sometimes =
can be a pain - and novice users simply won't bother the hassle.
d) As a developer I feel that Linux is extremely good for hosting =
systems and other mission critical software, etc. But on the other hand, =
for the novice user it simply does not cut it. And undoubtedly, there =
still is a wider range of software available for Windows than there is =
for Linux.
Cheers, (and sorry for sounding negative)
Angelo Dalli
