 I do remember you from the old days.

Well your message got me to look closer at the lilo parameters that the 
installation set and I found one oarameter acpismp=force. Removeing this did 
not work but it also suggested that the kernel installed was multiprocessor. 
I reinstalled and this time i manually selected a standard kernel with no 
multiprocessor support and the problem went away.
