There are two types - analog and digital. The ones which you described
as "simply disconnect KVM from once PC, etc..." are manual KVM switches
- you have an external knob and which you rotate it and it will give the
respective monitor/keyboard/mouse set of cables, continuity to the
monitor/keyboard/mouse. On the other hand, on the digital KVM switches,
you simply tap a key from the keyboard and a menu pops on your screen
which will allow you to select which PC to use. Both of them are O/S
independent. Analog KVM are cheap and robust and don't need an external
power supply, but are a bit big in shape with respect to the digital
ones. The Digital KVM switches are far more expensive, prone to burn
out, and nice design. Depends on your budget. I have one 2-port analog
KVM which I used only few times because I soon added two more servers
and required to upgrade to a digital one (some Lm70). If you're
interested I can sell you this analog one for Lm5 lol...

Subject: [LINUX.ORG.MT] KVM Switches and GNU/Linux

Hey Guys,

Seems like I'm the only one who ever asks questions here... Is it me
who's an idiot or you who are geniuses? lol...

Anyway, I'd like to buy a 2-way KVM switch. I've heard that there are
two types, those which fool the PC not using KVM that it is using KVM
and those who simply disconnect KVM from one PC and activate another.
Could anyone please tell me the proper names for them?

Will the second type work on GNU/Linux? Disconnecting my keyboard and
connecting it back again doesn't work, so it think it may cause
problems.

Thanks,
