Actually I used genkernel --menuconfig all, I kept default options and
just removed framebuffer and added parallel printing support

It looks like your newer kernel has not been configured for Virtual
Memory 

Support. If you have the two kernel configuration files at hand 

(/usr/src/linux.../.config) do a diff on them and look out for the word
VM.
