Well put it this way, there is a lot of pressure being placed on the EU by companies which have a large portfolio of ludicrous patents, for the EU to get patents similar to the US. On the other hand there are companies lobbying for much more restricted patents. So, it depends on who wins - we could still end up with US-style software patents. In fact in recent news, the EU justice committee (JURI) has practically rejected all the proposed amendments which would have made the directive somewhat more palatable.
