Andrew,
         had an ECS with similar problems (was based on via chipset..) Try
installing with one dimm only and add more ram later (if i
remember correctly board was very fussy when more than one dimm
installed had to lower memory speed to 100mhz). Also I recall
that I had to disable ACPI in bios as the ACPI implmentation was
buggy.

If board is via based disable agp x4 and fastwrites in bios as via's early
implementation had stability problems (infact xp forces agp x2 even if x4
is selected in bios)
