repeating the idea I expressed in the general mailing list

how hard would it be for us ( as MLUG) to convince and maybe assist a local
vendor to be able to sell computers that are pre-installed with some OEM
linux ( Ubuntu imo but thatis open to debate)...

I mean we were just talking in another thread about how we could give a more
widespread area for linux usage here in malta and this would probably be a
start. Yes true, around 85% of the ppl wont even boot it once...but the
remaining 10% will wipe it after the 3rd boot while 5% of them may even keep
it and try to use it.

Imo we should try to identify a good contendor for this idea and then try to
highlight the key points which could interest him and his clients:

mainly (this is a fast overview)

cheaper (around Lm40 cheaper for the customer) thus the edge of having
computers which are cheaper than other competitors
Far more secure and fool proof
Can fullfill all the basic functions that windows does..including using it
as a workstation (OOo pre-installed and basically an office clone)
Has IM functionality with the added goodness of not being effected by the
latest msn worm.
You are cool cos you use linux
highlight that some games such as quake series, warsow, ut2004, etc etc work
on linux perfectly
if one would like to impress, beryl may be shown altho this would be a
demonstration only purpose (until it's atleast beta software >.<)
Even cooler cos u use beryl along with linux
Linux has an integrated firewall that can be managed with many front ends
available freely.
System administration is far easier since you dont risk having your kids
wreck your computer and your work with the latest bonzi buddy
Extremely easy way to install software (tick and click ) synaptic etc

MLUG forums are available for ppl to recieve voluntary help from the
members.

We could also try to provide the supplier of these pcs with a list of known
linux compatible devices that can be used to reference to when someone who
is running linux wants to buy some peripheral.

The list above is a small list i compiled in the spur of the moment. Im sure
many more highlights can be thought up and can be addressed when we would be
meeting a potential supplier
