Hey, check the Beryl pages as there are some good instructions on running Beryl with Ubuntu Edgy and ATI. I have done this and it worked fine.
I am now trying to get Beryl to run on my machine with Ubuntu Feisty, but it is not working for me yet. If you follow the instructions on the Beryl website for installing with ATI and Edgy you should have no problems. I have two machines with X800 and X1300 ATI cards, and so you should have no problem with your X300 card.
