Hi all,
Over the past 2 days I have met-up with Jean and Shawn to discuss
possibilities of promoting Linux at Uni.

Following is an outline of ideas we discussed, which I would like to present
to the community for any comments, ideas, improvements, etc...

The main idea we intend to be pushing is an Open Source day sometime in
March (perhaps we could make use of the 3rd March for geeky reasons [square
root day]). 2 interesting possibilities we have discussed for the day could
be an introductory Linux workshop. Should we find it difficult to find
someone to take over the duty of teaching, we could always approach the
institute in malta that offers LPI certification and ask if they could send
someone to give the talk.

The other would be some sort of "Linux Exhibition". This would work best if
we were given access to one of the labs, install linux (+ eye candy + killer
apps) and people could just sit down and play around with linux and view the
interesting features. Something on a projector screen is also a possibility.

Leading up to the event, publicity will focus on the following:
- A set of cheeky posters, possibly one focusing on each of a list of "why
use Linux" set up around campus
- An article(s) on the student's paper.
- some sort of simple but sexy web presence for our efforts. Eventually this
will include some multimedia content, a forum for the community (if it
builds up to a level that it is required), pages related to specific
projects underway, etc
- A section of the above mentioned site to link to open source software,
distro mirrors, tutorials, etc

One of the first steps we had in mind is to approach* the dean of the
faculty of ICT to ask for the faculties backing. Also we will hopefully have
the support of ICTSA once the event comes along (Marc, being on the list,
you are officially invited to comment on this as ICTSA president)

*I will probably be doing the talking, and if no one objects, I will present
myself as a representative of MLUG.

I hope to get some interesting feedback from you guys!

Seb
