I have got an FX 5200 and PCX 5300 at home and have managed to run various distros on them without problem for quite a while. If using Ubuntu I would suggest using "Hardware Drivers" to install the required proprietry drivers. It has always worked just fine for me and I don't think it can get any easier than that.
If he has been trying to fix things up for 4 days then by now he has probably messed things up quite bad so I would suggest setting stuff back to default before giving it a try.
