I totally agree Anton its a far safer way to use Synaptic if it works, 
but then I'm crazy and I am good at screwing up my system. I have found 
some items that get deleted from their folder but stay in the root trash 
can so I always check there. But must admit to not screwing up my system 
removing redundant Kernels!
