i have used kubuntu for a while. im not sure if you are a gnome fan or kde fan. but i have used kubuntu and tried ubuntu with great success. it detects my resolution correctly even when booting off the live cd as well as after installation.
kubuntu can be downloaded from www.kubuntu.org (kde) the next release is due out on the 23rd of this month. www.ubuntu.com this is the gnome version. these are debian derived distros. the release cycle for this distro is every 6 months. good luck with it and if you runninto issues with ubuntu or kubuntu on irc.freenode.net i monitor and help in the ubuntu-mt (maltese channel) i dont speak maltese though. hopefully this will hit the ears of other kubuntu and ubuntu users.
