On the Times online today (and probably the treeware version too), there is
an item about a super-computer being commissioned at the department of
Physics at university. I wrote to the person responsible to try to find out
more, and got this interesting response:

Dear Mr. Casha,

Thank you for your interest in our supercomputer project, funded through
the European Regional Development Fund, for which I am the Project Manager.
The project is currently in the tendering stage (we expect a European
tender to be issued shortly), and more details will made publicly available
when the contract is finalised. However I can say that we are aiming a
machine having the x86-64 architecture with a minumum of 500 processor
cores, a low-latency interconnect, and an estimated performance of 500Gflops
or better.

This facility will be the first of its kind in Malta and has already excited
great interest in the academic community. We also see the generation of
interest in high-performance computing in the computing and technical
sectors outside the University as a prime goal of this project. In fact, we
envisage holding an open day and seminar shortly after the commissioning of
the facility, which you or your organisation may be interested in
contributing to.
If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact
me.

Regards,
