That is very exciting!!
Do you think we could setup a meeting Ramon?

I have confirmed - the new super-computer WILL be running Linux.
The offer to contribute during the open day could be a brilliant
opportunity for MLUG, but I think it would be great to get somehow
involved in the project itself. I have no idea how we can help yet,
but we could meet up with the people involved in this project and
have an informal chat.

On the Times online today (and probably the treeware version too),
there is an item about a super-computer being commissioned at the
department of Physics at university. I wrote to the person
responsible to try to find out more, and got this interesting
response:
Dear Mr. Casha,
Thank you for your interest in our supercomputer project, funded
through the European Regional Development Fund, for which I am the
Project Manager. The project is currently in the tendering stage
(we expect a European tender to be issued shortly), and more details
will made publicly available when the contract is finalised.
However I can say that we are aiming a machine having the x86-64
architecture with a minumum of 500 processor cores, a low-latency
interconnect, and an estimated performance of 500Gflops or better.
This facility will be the first of its kind in Malta and has already
excited great interest in the academic community. We also see the
generation of interest in high-performance computing in the
computing and technical sectors outside the University as a prime
goal of this project. In fact, we envisage holding an open day and
seminar shortly after the commissioning of the facility, which you
or your organisation may be interested in contributing to.
If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to
contact me.
Regards,

Dear Ms Spiteri,
I read about the article on the Times about the supercomputer lab
being set up within the Department of Physics at University. I am
very much interested in this project. I am the founder and a member
of the Malta Linux User Group, and have followed at a distance the
development of massively parallel processing, particularly using
Linux, BSD and other open source software.
I wonder whether any other information is available about this
project, particularly which systems will be used in its
implementation. If you could direct me to the person(s) who are
responsible for implementing this project I'd be very grateful.
