Apple was indeed very much secretive and closed back then.  It's no
wonder: Steve Jobs has a reputation of being one of the most outrageous
control freaks there is in this industry.  And that's why it's no wonder
Apple's habits haven't really changed in this regard (see iTunes, iPod
Touch, and iPhones for examples).

In many ways Apple is a lot more opposed to Free Software than
Microsoft is.  Or rather I'd say that Apple is opposed to Free Software
whereas Microsoft is opposed to Open Source.
