After using vmware forever, I am a very happy convert to virtualbox. It 
is not server grade virtualization maybe, but it is excellent for 
desktop use (across platforms, the mac version works very well also). 
The newest version allows more than one CPU per instance, which is the 
last thing I would have used vmware for.

On an older server I would look more to xen or openvz... I personally 
like openvz, but they are both very good platforms.
