You don't *have* to, just sometimes UI changes make config files weird 
or you have set something in gnome sound prefs that is now deprecated... 
I have run into enough of these issues where I feel it is nice to start 
afresh. If you know what you are doing and don't mind some 
reconfiguration, perfect to do what you have done. I do it to enough 
servers and other non-every day systems (all debian btw).

I do copy over alot of things on my desktop reinstalls, like .filezilla 
.mozilla .thunderbird .ssh Documents/ etc. I also have good daily 
backups so can restore anything if needed.

I like seeing the default setup they are using, since I install it for 
newbie linux users and need to be able to say "click here, then click 
there".
