It is kind of by attrition since I change systems so much I got tired of customizing, trying to back that up and make all my systems have that config. The default setup is fine, add some bar items (disk mount etc) and I am done. I also set all the gnome bars to autohide.
If I wanted to hack around and get eyecandy I would go KDE, it is looking pretty nice these days, but it is pretty far from my ideal, so lots of work would have to go into it. My lightweight choice for VNC or slow comps is fluxbox, from my gentoo days.
