Ok, well, my first step was to ask the supplier where I bought the DVR device.
Just got an email back from them:

"We've asked our supplier but have not been able to get any additional
information on GPL code or any API information on this DVR. I've asked a couple
of times but they told us it's not available. Sorry."

So my next step is to contact myself the manufacturer, or what I think is the
manufacturer since this is a device made in Taiwan that is sold under different
part number by different vendors...
