You may want to check out dokuwiki, pretty simple, stores everything in 
plain text, made for documentation projects. Write up about it in issue 
80 of linux user mag.

I use a cool tiny offline javascript-based wiki for carrying around with 
me - tiddlywiki, keep a copy on s3 as well for remote access.

Daily logs sound technically like a blog... maybe a blog system would 
actually work well, time-based, searchable, etc. The simple tables thing 
may be harder to find ootb, but with a decent platform it should be easy 
to get it done, even if you have to query the db directly.
