I have used both archlinux and i think it is a sweet distro but requires work to get it up to a par. Personally on my thinkpad t42 with less ram im running Linux Mint 7.0 It works flawlessly for me. I have tried version 8 but at the time it was very slow on my machine so i went back to Linux Mint 7. Arch Linux is sweet but as i said requires reading their wiki to get stuff up and running although i believe if and when i move away from linux Mint 7 on my laptop it will be arch linux i go with because most distro's coming out now require some serious horsepower and alas my little thinkpad cannot keep up.
