Personally I much prefer the Linux Software RAID as it is much easier to deal with a failure or a change of the controler card.

Problem is with most is that they are "fake" raid cards that actually require the host to process. This effectively means "software RAID". You can already do this just using 2 drives on whatever controllers your MB already has if you really wanted. Now if you want REAL RAID.. well that costs.... Real cards = less headaches. Its treted as 1 drive. To everything. No screwups, no direct-acccessing a member drive directly (got hit with this once myself)

Subject: [MLUG] Recomendation on "low-cost" RAID SATA cards

Hi,

Want to put a RAID card in my home server running CentOS, any
recommendation on low-cost that will give less head-ake? I know LSI
works GREAT, but don't want to shelf out 300$ for one...
