I guess it depends on how it works... Is it a client telneting in (command line) to a login shell, then invoking a curses type informix application? If it is something like that, where a human is doing the authentication, then it will be no problem (replacing telnetd with ssh)
If the client side is a program, then it is really opening some kind of socket API, then you may indeed need to set up a port forward tunnelled through ssh, as others have said.
