In my fstab, there was a parameter called defaults,
I appended a noauto as defaults, noauto to various lines and yes, the
drives no longer appear automounted.
But as I can't do a mount via gnome. For example, selecting the drive in
the places drop-down menu, I get a popup occurs to say that I am not
authorized to do a mount, only root can do it, but I do not (as I do in
Fedora) get a prompt to provide the root password.
Am I wrong to assume that Debian is really just for server use.

There is no use in fooling with your fstab, but have fun. I gave you the
correct answer hours ago ;)
