well, for a short answer is NO
grub1 and grub-almost-2  use different configs and Absolutely 
different way of loading OS

I do not want to into details this season ))) but it is simply NO


PS :: when you upgrade to grub2 it should automatically re-read your
configs and generate a new one, based on these
If it does not - then you are in the troubles,,, may be BIOS
may be disk ID does not match
