sure there are a lot of distros, but IMHO, not so many allow us to get a
small enough and recent system to run on small/old computers.

In this way, Bodhi is a good alternative, allowing to run recent
softwares on little hardware.

As you say, just try to setup normal ubuntu on such a little hardware
than 300mhz 128mb of ram, i'm not sure you'll get it running soon as a
"usable" computer. Here's a nice way to get a working computer with only
the minimal tools needed, without taking many time to build your custom
config such as with gentoo like ;)
