Nick N mentioned something about external USB wireless cards.
Why cannot one such device be built-into the desktop or laptop monitor frame.
The antenna could be inches to over a foot long. 

My laptop frame is molded plastic. Hardly any metal in my laptop case.

Ditto for my desktop monitor
