So, I'd like to get a bit of advice / wisdom born of
experience from the LUG. Will I be able to install a new linux
distro while preserving my extant encrypted /home, /tmp and
swap? If so, any pitfalls I ought to be wary of? Apart from
the obvious (backup everything first), any other tips or
advice?
Thanks and best,

If you are reinstalling you can just wipe your swap and /tmp and
re-encrypt them since they won't have anything important.
If you can access the machine now, backup /home and reinstall
completely, then restore /home - by backup I mean boot into the system,
decrypt /home and copy those decrypted files to another drive,
unencrypted. If you are paranoid you could use truecrypt to make a
container for them on the destination drive.
From a livecd you should still be able to mount your /home, you will
need to know the type of encryption was used, your password, and the
method to decrypt (ie what command you must use). Obviously the livecd
needs to support your encryption method.
