Hi all,

I presently have two laptops, both running an out of date
version of crunchbang linux. Both were installed with /home,
/tmp and swap partitions in an encrypted LVM. This was the
first time I've ever used encryption on anything more than the
single file level. (I am not 100% sure I am using the
terminology correctly.) Crunchbang's installer allows setting
this up by falling back to what I understand to be essentially
debian's text-based installer. I managed to figure it out
after a false start or two.

Booting from live CDs on the one box with a drive seems to
leave me with no way to access /home on the machines. No real
shock (though a disappointment), but it does leave me a bit
uncertain about how to proceed in installing a new OS on these
boxen. Unfortunately, I have no test machines available. (I'm
living in Cairo for the year and my two laptops are both
production machines.)

So, I'd like to get a bit of advice / wisdom born of
experience from the LUG. Will I be able to install a new linux
distro while preserving my extant encrypted /home, /tmp and
swap? If so, any pitfalls I ought to be wary of? Apart from
the obvious (backup everything first), any other tips or
advice?

Thanks and best,

Brian vdB
