Good news everyone!
Here is the official blog post from Valve regarding the development of
Steam for Linux. It seems that the first game available will be Left 4
Dead 2 as it is already natively running on Ubuntu 12.04.

There are currently no mention of third-party Linux support through
Steam, but it's obvious that this will happen. Many indie developers
already support Linux and Steam will make the distribution only easier.
They also speak about open source in their post, and this leaves me
wondering if they simply meant that their software will be available on
an open source operating system, or if they actually intend to open
source some of their software. This isn't too far fetch since they
already rely on the community to keep making content for Team Fortress 2
as well as Dota 2, which they push with their own update.

It's only good if you like being locked into Steam (and the issues that
go with it). Hopefully companies that release through steam will also
make the software available as standalone apps.
