I have an interesting problem.

Our internet connection at work has been "problematic". (it fails on average once every 2week for about 2 min). I need to know when the problem happens so I can run some tests while the connection is down.

What I'm looking for is some way to send a message via IM in a script. I have a process that checks various /var/log files and sends me an e-mail each time the connection goes down, but I would prefer if the message was sent via either jabber or the "Bonjour/Avahi/People Nearby/Rendezvous" protocol. Any suggestion on a CLI client that could be used in a script?
