I have an interesting problem.

Our internet connection at work has been "problematic". (it fails on
average once every 2week for about 2 min). I need to know when the
problem happens so I can run some tests while the connection is down.

What I'm looking for is some way to send a message via IM in a
script. I have a process that checks various /var/log files and
sends me an e-mail each time the connection goes down, but I would
prefer if the message was sent via either jabber or the
"Bonjour/Avahi/People Nearby/Rendezvous" protocol. Any suggestion on
a CLI client that could be used in a script?

I assume you have a secondary internet connection (obviously?)...
I do. The transition is not always smooth, but we have a slower second
link.

this could be helpful:

and https://www.ebower.com/docs/ubuntu-scripted-gtalk/

Thanks. I was hopping to find one solution that support serverless
xmpp, but I guess I'll have to install a server inside our network...

If you have a company cell phone, you could always send yourself a message via your cell phone company's email-to-sms gateway.
