It doesn't matter if the chip is AMD or Intel, both can (and usually do) support 64bit extensions.
"AMD64" is just a naming convention some ditros/devs use. "x86_64" is what you'll find on most RHEL clones. Either way, they are 64bit versions of the OS/libriary.
If you only have i386/i686 on your system, chances are you installed a 32-bit version of your distro of choice.
