If my understanding is correct, "all" minus "not memorized" does not actually equal "memorized". For example, everyday when I go through my scheduled cards there are always some that I have forgotten. I didn't just forget them overnight. And if I were to go through all my cards in one sitting I'm sure I would come up with lots more forgotten cards. Ideally this number is as small as possible, but that is just the ideal.
So it is not actually possible to come up with an accurate number of memorized cards. Renn, you may want to consider breaking your cards down into categories and then only activating the category you plan to to memorize for the next day or so. That way you are getting your "not memorized" number down to zero. That's what Patrick is talking about. I, too, would feel it a drag to have a huge number of not memorized cards. If you uses categories and get not memorized down to zero, at the end of the day your total card number is almost like a total memorized number, or at least the closest thing possible. It seems that the SRS method is so counter to how most people have experienced learning that we long for familiar markers. I have found, though, that relaxing into the algorithm has been quite liberating. There is another piece of software called Anki which is very feature rich, but for me was too confusing to use. It has lots and lots of statistics information, but I eventually find the statistics distracting. Peter's strong commitment to what is at the core of Mnemosyne makes it the beautiful, not to mention stable, work that it is. He is doing all of this work out of generosity and not pay. I hope that his model becomes more common, namely focused software that is finished and does its job, yet is easy for others to enhance.
