I imagine the current exact area for the show-answer button was
decided pretty arbitrarily; so there shouldn't be any issue in just
making the show-answer button big enough to fill the same area as the
grade-buttons. (And maybe enlarge the font a little or something, but
one would have to see it to know whether any change was merited.)

I figured you'd say that. :(

But I made sure to mention that one of the groups benefitting from
this change would be the newbies - an option you cannot use is bad
design. And obviously newbies are exactly the one group you don't want
to force to do something like install a plugin, since they're the
group worst at knowing they need something, being able to find
something, and then being able to successfully install that something.
So a plugin may be a good first step for prototyping, but ultimately
it should be on by default.
