That eventually worked. I created the STYLE.CSS with Notepad which added its own .txt extension, which didn't show up when viewed in Explorer. It confused me for ages.
If connected to the PC, the mobile gives error messages about the card directory not being valid. Sometimes disconnecting solves this. Sometimes I have needed to reboot. There also seems to be some confusion about whether '\sdcard\' is needed at the start of the path. Anyway, everything working at last. Now, to get on with improving my vocabulary. Thanks.
