Hello Peter, Timothy and all.....
A few more thoughts on the Mnemosyne 2 beta.....
In the card browser. Adding tags is slower on my (Windows 7) computer than
changing categories was in Mnemosyne 1.x. This is especially true with
large groups of cards. In addition, since there is no option to rename tags
from within the browser menu, changing categories now requires two steps:
first adding a new tag, then deleting the old one.
Timothy Bourke's excellent FastFormat plugin does not currently work with
Chinese text. eg. `你好` , shows up as plain black text and `` quotation
marks, instead of in red font like it is set to.
English formatting displays without any problem. Curiously, formatting of
Chinese text displays in the card browser--just not while doing reviews.
In the edit card window. Closing the window or clicking the Exit button
launches a dialog box that asks, "Abandon current card?" The English here
could be clearer. The first few times I saw this, I was worried I was
turning off the card (or worse) deleting it. "Abandon changes to current
card?" or "Exit current card without saving?" would be clearer.
Statistics menu, cards added tab. Graph scaling. Say you make, on average,
between 5 and 30 new cards a day. One day you import 10000 cards from your
Mnemosyne 1.x library. Because the graph scales exactly and 10000 is much
greater than 30, your daily card additions are now invisible. The only way
to make them visible is to select a time scale that doesn't include the day
you imported 10000 cards.
In the card browser, right-click menu. The keyboard shortcut "Ctrl/P" is
listed beside the Edit, not the Preview command.
Activate cards menu. This one's tricky to explain. I have created two sets,
sets A and B. The cards in sets A and B are of different card types. While
reviewing cards in Set A, I create a card with my normal Set A card type,
but using a new tag (one I haven't used before). Now if I enter the
Activate cards menu, and open Set B, this new tag is already activated. Why
are new tags automatically activated for all sets? The card will never
appear in my Set B reviews, since it's of a different card type, but it
shows up checked in the Activate cards menu anyway.
Soon I'll be buying a Lenovo X220 tablet and doing Mnemosyne reviews in
tablet mode with touch or stylus pen. I love the new Activate Cards menu
and use it constantly. A small Activate Cards icon (next to Browse Cards
and Statistics) would be nice.
I know I've mentioned these before. Just want to double-check that these
problems are beyond your control. (1) I use white text on black backgrounds
for my reviews. Easy on the eyes, but there is no text cursor in the
add/edit card windows. (2) In Mnemosyne 2 Beta, Chinese text does not sort
according to pinyin (something it did in 1.x). 90% of my cards use Chinese
in the Question, Answer, and Tag fields. This makes the sorting function
unusable to me, program-wide.
And finally... There is no way to edit the names of cloned card types. I
called my first cloned card type "Read 'dis shit", and now am living with
my poor decision :-)
Thanks once again for all your hard work!
