Two observations to add: The preview of the card shows everything correctly! The error appears only in the card browser and in the actual review of the card (which, I presume, are two instances of the same underlying view). Apparently the operation used by preview is different than that used by the browser and the actual card. If so, a comparison of the processes could reveal the source of the problem.
I tested another cloze box on the same card by deleting only a single letter rather than the entire word.
