Have you tried collecting answer/response times? I think this would differentiate recalling answers vs deriving the answer. For example 8*8 and 8^2 are the same /logical/ operation, but translating n^2 to n*n requires 2 additional computational steps.
Also, have you tried finding correlations based on string size? The longer the answer, the more likely that the user is forgetting only PART of the answer.
