Not sure I understand you latest sentence completely, but in your original mail, you had

<latex>
$ (..stuff..) $
</latex>

That's too complex, as you can just specify a math environment like this:

<$>
(..stuff..)
</$>

Does that solve you problem?

I way around is to use instead of just the brackets this: $[$
