It sounds like this issue may have existed in Ubuntu some time ago, caused 
by a mismatch between an installed NVidia graphics driver conflicting with 
the libGL.so build:

The workaround there was to add these lines during program initialisation:

if sys.platform.startswith('linux'):
  from OpenGL import GL
